Wings by Felix Velez |
Five words that come to mind...
1.)Angel
2.)Detail
3)Heaven
4.)Hell
5.)Warrior
2.) I like how the sculpture Wings shows both simplicity and complexity. I like All the detail that goes into the face, wings, and body. Yet, the sculpture is simple in the fact there is hardly and coloring or shading involved. The off white color shows the purity of this angel.
3.) I like the slight shade into a full gold ball at the bottom. The shading does add a little bit to the sculpture, but I think Wings would have been better off left all white. White emphasizes, calmness, tranquility, and peace, which best represents the Angel.
4.) I would purchase the sculpture if I had the oppurtunity. I love the way the angel is on top of the world. That shows dominance, yet the face and way the angel is moving shows peace. To me it represents, God is greater than anything in the world.
5.) Wings definitely is of the relious subject matter. The angel symbolizes the God and Heaven's occupants. USF is a christian school and Wings portrays a christian character, an angel. I like the the angel is holding out it's hand. The viewer and sculpture come together through this action because it seems like the angel is inviting in the viewer.
6.) Wings must be viewed from the front, where the black and gold sign is, in order to get the full perspective of the sculpture. If viewed from the back, Wings look just like some sort of winged human standing. The lighting enhances Wing's brightness. When the sun is shining, Wing's seems to glow and appear to be more white on top. Also when the sun is shining, the globe on the bottom becomes darker from the shadow. That makes the shading more prevalent.
7.) This work is more rounded and detailed than most other sculptures on the walk. A lot of detail takes place on the angel's body and face. Everything also appears to be very smooth because of the almost marble like pattern that appears if you look close enough. I feel like Wings is mostly a concrete sculpture. The meaning stands out as an angel ontop of the world, inviting you in.
I picked Wings because it was the best sculpture to me. I connected most with Wings and loved the detail and amount of work that went into Wings. Felix put a lot of hardwork and effort into Wings which is why it turned out to look so good.
Comedy/Tragedy by Dee Clements |

1.)Sad
2.)Searching
3.)Confused
4.)Drama
5.)Interested
2
I like that the artist only included hands with the faces. It made me focus more on what each character is trying to potray. I also like similarity in faces. Makes it seem like a split personality almost.
3
I don't like the position of the faces. The top face is pointed south, and the botomm face is pointed southwest. The akward positioning makes it hard to take the sculpture all in at once without moving. I also don't like the dark side of Comedy/Tragedy. The tragedy side makes the sculpture gloomy overall.
4
I don't think I would purchase this sculpture if granted the oppurtunity. Comedy/Tragedy is not something that applies to my life. I have never really been interested in drama or acting. I also like to think I never had a tragedy or something wrong in my life. I only look toward the positives of events that happen in my life.
5
I believe this sculpture represents good and bad. Comedy/Tragedy embodies the good and bad in any event or person. The comedy face shows the viewer the good or positive in everything. Where as the tragedy face shows the negative events or feelings that also occurs from time to time.
6
Comedy/Tragedy is viewable only from the front and a little to the side. Otherwise if you view the sculpture from the back, then you can't tell at all what it actually is. I had to view the sculpture from the front and then move to the left in order to see the bottom facial expression. Natural light greatly effects Comedy/Tragedy. The hat on the top head puts a shadow on the face. The facial expression seems more dark and depressed this way. And the light brightens the bottom face to make the facial expression appear more happy and positive.
7
This sculpture is more angular and detailed. The hands and arms create a variety of angles. The faces are very detailed as well. The make up and wrinkles on the forehead give much needed texture to the sculpture. The surface is rough because of the material used and the blotted make up on the faces. If I had to put a label on Comedy/Tragedy, it would be abstract. The viewer has to think about what is truly going on with each person represented and how it could possibly apply the emotions to their life.
I picked Comedy/Tragedy because of the meanings behind it. The sculpture showed two different emotions that tend to apply to everyday life. Dee expressed these two emotions very well.

Survival by Nathan Pierce |
Five words that come to mind...
1.) Tall
2.) Blue
3.) Simple
4.) Wire
5.) Tower
2.) I like the size of this sculpture. My eyes immediately caught this sculpture from a distance. Also the color and shading of the blue and rust gray make Survival an interesting piece.
3.) I don't like the simplicity of Survival. I feel like anyone could have made this sculpture with a little time and effort. In order for me to totally appreciate artwork, the sculpture must be something I could never attempt to recreate on my own.
4.) I don't think I would ever display Survival in my home. Like I said above, I will only buy or fully appreciate artwork if the sculpture looks like a lot of time and effort went into the piece. Survival is a piece of artwork that does not visually appeal as complex or completed by an experienced artist.
5.) Basing off the title and height of the sculpture, I believe Survival is symbolizes the journey to the top. I can't get much out of Survival because it does not immediately make sense to me. The sculpture is very abstract and takes a lot of deep thought to truly appreciate it.
6.) One advantage of Survival is that it can be viewed from any angle. I took a 360 degree tour of Survival and I got the same impression or understanding from each side. Although you do see more of the rock from the southwest, or where the sign is located. They do not add much too the sculpture but more confusion. Natural lighting ephasizes the blue blocks. The shadow cast at the bottom gives more depth and shape to the rectangular blocks.
7.) Survival is primarily geometric and angular shaped. The wires in the Survival give a slight rounded look to the sculpture. Everything else is very simplified and rough appearing. The brown rust applied to the blue gives an aged and metal feel to Survival. In all I would have to classify Survival as a abstract sculpture. Nathan Pierce had more meaning behind this piece of art than just wire connecting a tower of blocks.
I tried to pick a sculpture that did not immediately appeal to me as an instant classic so to say. Survival was that sculpture for me. But I am not one to put down Survival. I am no way a skilled art critic.
